Jerry Lourenco Lead Singer with his band Once My Way

I’m a singer of a new style metalcore band. I’ve been a signed recording artist for the last 10 years. But, there was a big problem, I didn’t know how to sing. As an artist who has recorded many records, toured, played 1000’s of shows, you can imagine how this could be an issue. I have been in hardcore/metal acts and my role as a singer revolved around me screaming. But due to all the experience I had, I knew it was going to be hard to drop my pride and admit that when it came to singing, I had no idea what to do. After a bad experience in a high end recording studio and having the producer work his “magic” to make me sound decent, I knew I needed help right away. The next day I researched vocal coaches. No luck at all. I spent a month searching to find the right coach who would understand where I was coming from, understand what I needed and most importantly understand the genre of music I make. Clearly learning opera or broadway style singing was not something I would entertain. I needed a coach that could tailor her teachings to quickly give me the knowledge and skill to get me singing and has to be the right singing to fit my current project. It would not be an easy task. I came across Terry Little’s site one day, and after reading about her experience and teachings I had a good feeling. I contacted her and she quickly understood exactly what I needed from a coach and the challenges we were going to face given all my screaming experience. At first it was impossible, we were trying to re program my brain, and many times I wanted to give up. But Terry always motivated and pushed me hard and promised within 6 months I would find my “voice.” I thought it was impossible, because I hated my voice and it was so difficult to rewire my brain to do the exact opposite of what I have been doing well for so long. I was my own worst enemy, and the fact I had accomplished so much in my music career already, I felt I should be further and better at singing naturally. This stressed me out, making the situation more difficult. Needless to say, I was a hard client. But Terry never gave up or ever let me off the hook. Her understanding of what I needed and where my attitude was lead her to create new teaching styles and techniques to fix what seemed impossible to fix. Well, here I am, a year and a half later, 2 new records out, and I sing on both of them. Terry was right, after 6 months I did find my voice and I was able to sing, not perfect but it was a start. Now, I can seemlessly switch back and forth between brutal screaming to beautiful singing. Not one show goes by where I do not get complimented on my singing voice. I could not have done it without Terry and I definitely could not have done it as fast as I did. Terry understands all genres of music and is not going to cookie cutter teach every student the same way. I could not be happier that I met Terry and became her student, and now just because I learned a lot and can sing, we do not slow down. Every week she finds a new way to challenge and improve on my weaknesses and offers me things that I never thought I wanted or can do vocally. Now, I have my own voice, my own style and I use it everyday creating the music that I want to. Much of the current success of my band, I owe to Terry. I’m confident, I can sing and she even found ways to relate her singing techniques to my screaming, making me a much better vocalist all around. That gives a lot of pride to say that after all these years I am finally a real vocalist, not scarred of live singing or studios ever again, I could not have done it without Terry Little and I look foward to seeing what she will bring to the future of my singing career.
